Bruce Springsteen tops the list of the ten highest paid musicians of 2021 – with $590 million – after selling his publishing rights to Sony.

The list, collated by Rolling Stone, reveals which musical acts have generated the most revenue in a pandemic year that has seen few tours and physical album sales increasingly crushed by streaming platforms.

However, the musicians on the list brought in a combined $ 2.3 billion, more than double what they earned on an annual basis in the years leading up to COVID-19.

This has been attributed to their massive catalog sales, with the exception of Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift.

The other artists made the most of their fortunes by selling copyright.

Springsteen, 72, made history last December with his massive $ 550 million paycheck selling his masters, and added a few million more with his return to Broadway last summer.

He’s also raked in millions more thanks to his Spotify podcast with Barack Obama Renegades: Born in the USA and an accompanying book of the same name.

Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, who made millions last year through various business deals, came in second on the list.

He reportedly raked in a grand total of $470 million, according to the report, after selling 80% of his Tidal streaming service and half of his Armand de Brignac champagne to luxury giant LVMH.

Another legacy act to reap the benefits of their back catalog was Paul Simon ($260 million) after selling his entire catalog to Sony in March last year.

The deal also included his songs he wrote as part of Simon and Garfunkel.

Kanye West reportedly made around $250 million, but not through his music production (the rapper released his tenth album Donda last year).

West – or Ye as he likes to be called – made most of his money from his shoe brand Yeezy.

Songwriter Ryan Tedder – who wrote songs for Adele – has made $200m, after private equity firm KKR acquired the rest of his publishing rights in January last year.

Again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers may not have had a hit album or tour last year, but they did receive $145 million for their comeback catalog at Hipgnosis as part of an agreement reached in May last year.

Impressive: Taylor Swift was the only female performer on the list, and the only artist who didn't enjoy a big catalog sale

Rich: Number two on the list, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z made millions last year through various business deals.

Fleetwood Mac guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham has struck a similar deal for $100 million with the same company.

The report notes that Stevie Nicks, who sold her catalog for $100 million in December 2020, was unable to make the list due to the TNZT.

Nicks’ absence meant Taylor Swift – who came in at number 10 with $80 million – was the only woman on the list.

As her catalog was notoriously taken away from her and sold to Scooter Braun, Swift began re-recording her old albums.

The sheer sales of these re-recordings – including Red (Taylor’s Version) and Fearless (Taylor’s Version) – allowed the singer to receive an impressive salary despite her grievances with her former record label.

She is also said to have made major deals with Peloton and Starbucks.

Blake Shelton – who earns $13 million per season of The Voice – reached ninth place.

The report notes that he received around $50 million for a catalog sale. Shelton already has an estimated worth of around $100 million.
