Indian shuttles PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth had another easy outing as they stormed into the quarter-finals of the women’s and men’s singles respectively with comfortable victories at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday. Sindhu, a silver medalist at the 2018 edition, was expected to face no resistance from Ugandan Husina Kobugabe, winning 21-10 21-9 in her pre-quarter final. Srikanth, who also finished second in Gold Coast, also didn’t break a sweat en route to a 21-9 21-12 win over Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama in the men’s singles.

Earlier, Indian women’s couple Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly had made it to the last eight with a 21-2 21-4 victory over Mauritius’ Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah.

Double Olympic medalist Sindhu will face Malaysian Goh Jin Wei in the next round for a place in the semifinals.

Sindhu had beaten Goh in two tight matches in the mixed-team final and can’t afford to lower her vigilance against the 22-year-old Malaysian, a gold winner of the 2015 and 2018 World Junior Championships.
