Destiny 2’s Tower Lag situation has become untenable

While I’m not sure this is worth an entire article, I felt like I had to mention it anyway because even with all the other improvements being made to Destiny 2, one thing is way behind.

The Tower, the game’s main social space, is becoming an almost unstoppable place to visit at this point. It seems like every season the menu lag in the tower gets worse and worse and now we’ve reached a point where most players will actively avoid the tower if they can, instead opting to take bounties from the online app or go to their postmaster or vault in the solo instance HELM instead.

The problem is that the game has slowed down to a hiccup when it comes to checking your menus or trying to perform actions in them in the Tower. The most obvious time this comes up is when you’re trying to transmog with ornaments or apply shaders or view. But even just… opening your character menu can result in a serious delay, in addition to the longer loading times to even get to the tower, where the game now often spits out *everyone* who loads on the tower at the exact same moment.

This is a problem for Destiny as literally the main social center of the game is where it is least efficient to customize your character or perform other actions. I don’t know what exactly causes this, but it has become a problem enough with every player taking notice and starting to avoid the tower when they could.

Bungie has talked a lot about maintaining the overall health of the game, which is why they started practicing content vaults in the first place, removing large parts of the game and lots of content to keep it a manageable size, upgrading of the engine and maintain performance. And while these issues aren’t nearly as common elsewhere in the game (although there is some lag in other zones), the Tower is an exception where things can just be absurd.

The problem is, this is almost never talked about and there doesn’t seem to be a timeline for a solution to whatever is going on here. Bungie wants players to spend more time in-game rather than third-party apps, but that’s a tough requirement when things like switching or collecting bounties are done more efficiently outside the game when it’s the current state of the Tower. And again, it feels like season after season is only getting worse.

I hope this can at least be fixed by Lightfall, when there will be other major changes to the game, as with any new expansion. Destiny is a social game with dangerously few real social spaces. The Tower is a place you hate to go to, this is not good for the health of the game, and I hope this can be rectified.
