Gold Coast influencer accused of “cultural appropriation” after asking fans if she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for Halloween

An influencer has been accused of “cultural appropriation” after asking her followers whether she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for a Halloween party.

Sophie Guidolin, 32, posted a poll on Instagram Stories so fans can help her decide, but she has been criticized for being white and Pocahontas and Princess Jasmine are both women of color.

Pocahontas was a 17th-century Native American woman whose life story was fictionalized in the 1995 Disney film of the same name. Princess Jasmine is a fictional Arab character from the 1992 Disney animation, Aladdin.

“We are in 2021. People have already been arrested for this. What planet do you live on to think everything is fine? Let me guess, these are white girls making their mark as influencers living on the Gold Coast, ”one person commented.

“The two princesses you shouldn’t dress up in,” wrote another.

One reviewer pointed out: “Pocahontas was based on a 12-year-old native girl who was kidnapped and raped and died in London when the first settlers stole her from her land.”

Guidolin deleted his social media poll following the backlash.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Sophie Guidolin for comment.

This comes after Guidolin spoke of her love life by confirming that she had reunited with her ex-boyfriend Ryan.

“Are you back with your ex?” A fan recently asked on Instagram, to which she replied, “Of course.”
