ISRO launches its smallest rocket tomorrow: know everything about SSLV, its first space flight


The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will conduct the first launch of its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) on Aug. 7 from Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andhra Pradesh. The rocket will carry Earth Observational Satellite (EOS-02) Mission to space.

According to ANI, the ground tests of the newly developed solid booster stage (SS1) for SSLV were conducted on March 12. All propulsion parameters during the tests were satisfactory and in line with expectations.

The mission will be launched from Sriharikota at 9:18 am. The EOS-02 mission is a technology demonstration satellite for many new technologies that can be applied in various sectors, including forestry, geology, hydrology and agriculture.

Specifically, a small satellite launch vehicle is a vehicle designed by the Indian Space Agency to lure the emerging market for small satellites. The aim is to provide launch-on-demand services to both domestic and foreign customers.

The purpose of the mission is to demonstrate ISRO’s technological advancements and the agency’s ability to launch smaller payloads into low Earth orbit.

SSLV was born by ISRO chief S Somnath, who is known for his rocket wizardry.

India’s smallest launch vehicle is designed to launch a 500kg payload into a 500km planar orbit. Meanwhile, the PSLV can bring about 1,750 kilograms of payload into the synchronous orbit around the sun at 600 km altitude.

The SSLV also has multiple satellite mounting options for nano, micro and small satellites.

According to ISRO, the 110-tonne SSLV is the one with the fastest turnaround time. Interestingly, the missile was assembled in just 72 hours against other launch vehicles that took about two months to complete.

Notably, the government has allocated Rs 169 crores for the development of this project.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the SSLV was created with the aim of building a cost-effective launch vehicle with a high launch frequency.
