A Kansas City man has been charged with murder, along with three other felonies, after he was arrested Thursday on suspicion of the murder of John Greer, a 23-year-old who was fatally shot in the Linwood Homeowners-Ivanhoe neighborhood in mid-August.

Davon D. Canady, 22, was charged Friday with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of weapons in connection with Greer’s murder, according to reports filed in Jackson County Circuit Court. Authorities requested that Canady be held in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bail.

On the night of August 9, Greer was found mortally wounded at a residence on the 3500 block of Wayne Avenue after Kansas City police were summoned after a report of a shooting. He was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators found that the shooting took place outside and when Greer ran into a house after being shot. Witnesses told police they heard gunshots coming from an empty lot ahead. Afterward, several men were seen getting into a black Chevy Monte Carlo and driving off along Wayne Avenue.

Surveillance images from the area captured photos of the Monte Carlo, including the license plate. But detectives were told by the Missouri Department of Revenue that the label was either altered or fake, according to court papers.

Witnesses later told police that Greer was visiting the 3500 block of Wayne Avenue when challenged to a fight by Canady. Canady was reportedly there with a group at the time.

Canady tried to hit Greer with a gun, witnesses said, then gave the firearm to another person. Then Canady and Greer began to “wrestle” one-on-one, a witness said.

Greer won the fight until another man from Canady Greer’s group shot in the back, witnesses said. According to court documents, Canady then took the gun and shot Greer a second time.

Canady was arrested late Thursday morning by Kansas City police on the 7200 block of Baltimore Avenue during a security operation. He was wanted for questioning in Greer’s murder last month, according to court papers.

On Friday, court papers did not list a lawyer for Canady who could speak on his behalf.
