“After an interview process with a five-person selection panel and the ratification of Cricket Australia’s full board of directors, Cummins today becomes the first fast bowler to be a full-time skipper of the Australian men’s team. test, and the first bowler of any kind to captain the team since Richie Benaud, “Cricket Australia said in a statement.
His appointment comes after Tim Paine sensationally resigned his post last week following revelations of a sexting incident in 2017, leaving Australia without a captain within three weeks of the first Vodafone Ashes test against England, “the statement added.
Cummins, who is the first test pitcher, said he was “honored to accept the role” of test captain ahead of the Ashes.
“I am honored to take on this role ahead of what will be a huge Ashes summer,” Cummins said in a statement.
“I hope I can provide the same leadership that Tim (Paine) has given to the group in recent years.
“With Steve and I as captains, a number of very senior players on this team and some great young talents coming in, we are a strong and tight-knit group.
“It is an unexpected privilege for which I am very grateful and look forward to.”
The first Ashes Test match between Australia and England will be played from December 8 at Gabba in Brisbane.
