A climber’s body has been recovered after a man fell to his death in a trench on Mt Ngāuruhoe in the central North Island.

Police said they were alerted by the Rescue Coordination Center shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday that a personal locating beacon had been activated.
Despite the Greenlea rescue helicopter quickly locating the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
His body was recovered by helicopter this morning by police and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organization.
A rāhui is now in place on the mountain.
