It all started in 2013 when Russia pushed the then Ukrainian president away from a business partnership with Brussels. Eight years, one revolution and two invasions later, the EU is now ready to grant Kyiv and Moldova EU candidate status. but what does that mean? And what will be the backlash? Would the bloc have the resolve to get Russia to cut off all gas exports? Putin can now assure his people that Ukraine’s EU membership is no big deal, but past statements say otherwise.
