Stockholm-based Candela, which is the world leader in electric hydrofoil boats that fly above the surface of the water to consume less energy, introduced a new boat based on an electric powertrain. The Candela P-8 Voyager was designed to replace traditional water taxis and commercial passenger water carts that relied on the combustion engine. The boat unveiled in Venice is based on the same bases as the C8 electric outboard.

The P8 relies on a hydrofoil system that is used on other electric boats of the brand. It was designed by more than 50 engineers who have experience in the drone, aerospace and software industries. The on-board flight controller modifies the angle of attack of the foil when the boat reaches the speed of 16 knots allowing it to take off and fly above the surface of the waves.

“You get the sea-keeping ability of a 100ft vessel in a 28ft, really. flying safely in absolute It’s a new level of luxury that, I dare say, has never been experienced at sea,” said Erik Eklund, Candela’s Chief Commercial Officer.

The boat’s flight controller relies on a wide array of sensors to measure wave height and ensure a smooth ride, even in adverse conditions. The system can handle four-to-five-foot-long boat chops and wakes thanks to its high ride height and quick roll, pitch, and lift adjustments that occur 100 times per second.

The system is also used for areas sensitive to boat wakes such as Venice itself. The hydrofoil system has almost no wake and the hydrofoils are no larger than the famous Venice gondolas.

The P8 Voyager has been designed to be very light in maintenance. The Candela C-Pod engine was specially developed for the company’s hydrofoil watercraft. It has a pair of submerged motors that provide 50 kW of power and directly drive the contra-rotating propellers without the need for a transmission.

It also means no oil, no noise and no coolant, which means no maintenance. It can also operate for 3,000 hours without service, which is 30 times longer than any internal combustion system.

It’s also a fully connected boat and supports OTA updates allowing Candela’s 24/7 service department to troubleshoot remotely.

“For commercial operators to go electric, we knew the service aspect was important. Whether you run a whale watching business or captain a superyacht, our goal is to never have no downtime on this boat due to maintenance,” says Eklund.
